Launching the channels to be transmitted through satellite transponders GSAT-15 and will be available shortly both on Dish TV as well as FreeDish from Doordarshan, President Pranab Mukherjee said that the use of satellite technology to reach the Unreached is time tested. He was pleased to note that the scale and reach of this technology have increased through the 32 DTH channels of Swayam Prabha. These channels will help students in rural areas and in remote areas where the IT infrastructure has not penetrated so well.

These channels transmit four hours of fresh content every day and contain lectures by the best teachers in the country. There is no monthly charge for viewing these channels. These channels include IIT-PAL channels that were intended to help students take the prestigious JEE exam, taught by IIT faculty.

In a function organised on the eve of the Guru Poornima, a day of greeting to teachers, the President also launched the portal Swayam that has become fully functional.

The portal allows taking courses offered by the best teachers, staying where they are. Swayam should be a call to pioneers among teachers to put new courses in the next areas on this platform in the format MOOCs. It is also a call to other teachers to use this material and improve their own teaching ability. Ultimately, it should lead to better levels of achievement in students.

With the launch of Swayam, India has become one of the few countries in the world to have its own interactive online learning platform that provides not only video conferences and reading material but also assignments/questionnaires that could end up in Obtain credits after completing the Evaluation System. More than 400 courses are available at Swayam covering all engineering and non-engineering subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Grants Commission of the University has already issued the Regulation that allows the transfer of credits obtained through the courses carried out through Swayam in the student's academic record. It is now possible for students and others to take courses from prestigious IITs or IIM without formally studying there. The platform has been built by Microsoft with totally indigenous efforts.

Mukherjee also launched the National Academic Depository at the National Convention on Digital Initiatives organised by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in New Delhi.

The president said that the diffusion of technology, the penetration of telecommunications and the Internet has offered an opportunity to stifle the gap in terms of access and quality. Digital technology enables good teachers to directly teach a large number of students who are not physically present in classes. TIC solutions offer an interactive learning experience through which students in remote parts of the country can benefit from the conferences of the best teachers. Digital modes are cheaper, more accessible, interactive and offer flexibility for people to learn at their own pace. We need to work together to ensure that they are widely adopted for teaching.

The president said that the National Academic Depository would help in the easy authentication of the credentials issued by the institutions. This would also help increase transparency and ease of operation. The other digital initiatives undertaken under the National ICT Education Mission (NMEICT) being presented today should help everyone to go digital to improve the quality of education.

He said that for the past five years, he had been emphasising improving the quality of education each time he met with the vice chancellors of central universities, IIT managers, NITs and IISc / IISERs. The conferences at Rashtrapati Bhavan have also acted as platforms for nurturing ideas. Many initiatives and ideas such as GIAN, IMPRINT and GRIN have taken root here. He invited the participants present to ensure that these initiatives are brought to their logical conclusion for the benefit of the nation.

Human resources development minister Prakash Javadekar and MoS Mahendra Nath Pandey were also present at the occasion.

The president has expressed hope that these digital initiatives will help produce the highly qualified young people required for the Make in India campaign. He urged the entire higher educational institution to march on the path of educational excellence consisting in the creation of new knowledge and the dissemination of these for the benefit of the nation. It was an emotional moment for the president, as many of these initiatives have taken shape under his leadership as a visitor to these institutions.
